ITEM DESCRIPTION:RA-2T Repeater Adaptor KIT for MOTOROLA RADIOS
Interfaces: (2) MOTOTRBO MOBILE TRANSCEIVERS
THIS IS A KIT >>>> Some assembly is required >>>> SOLDERING IS INVOLVED.
Please view the interior photo of a completed unit to see the (14) soldered connections you will need to make.
All needed parts are provided. Includes (2) 24" cable assemblies with radio connectors pre-installed, pre-drilled enclosure, and instructions. Just mount the components and wire them up according to the supplied diagram.
Now featuring a new enclosure (3.3 x 2.2 x 0.9"), 50% larger than the compact legacy RA series adaptors. The roomier housing simplifies assembly. Two-way technicians and amateur radio operators experienced with wiring diagrams and soldering will have no trouble putting this together in under an hour.
WHAT DOES IT DO? RA-2T is an interface for connecting two (2) MOTOTRBO mobile transceivers back to back as a simple 2-direction repeater. Signals received by Radio A are re-transmitted by Radio B and vice versa. If you wish to repeat in only one direction, simply program the PTT input of the RX radio as "UNPROGRAMMED". SEE FAQs BELOW. Compatible with all XPR Series MOTOTRBO mobile transceivers except XPR2500. Not for XPR2500.
NOTE: To install this product, you must be equipped to program both radios. Programming details are included.
SNAP-IN IGNITION SENSE LEADS (2) are included for optional field installation on the radio plugs. For fixed site use, connecting these to +12V will make the radios power back up automatically upon restoration of power after power loss; and in mobile installations, these may be connected to the vehicle fuse block for ignition control if desired.
FAQs
Q: What modes are supported?
A: RA-2T will repeat FM to TRBO, TRBO to FM, and FM to FM.
Q: How is the audio quality?
A: FM traffic repeated to TRBO sounds surprisingly good when the FM traffic is free of excessive static (i.e.: 20 dB of quieting or better). Very noisy FM signals do not translate well to TRBO. TRBO repeated to FM sounds just like TRBO, with virtually no audio degradation beyond that inherent in the DMR vocoder. FM to FM sounds excellent. Repeat audio levels are independently adjustable in both directions.
Q: Can two XPR mobiles connected back to back with this device and both operating in DMR mode take the place of a MOTOTRBO repeater, such as XPR8400, SLR5700, MTR3000?
A: No, because handheld and mobile DMR subscriber radios, when programmed for operation in REPEAT mode (transmit and receive freqs are different) expect to receive a handshake from a DMR repeater during the first few hundred milliseconds after keying up. If they do not receive a handshake, they assume no repeater is in range and will issue an error tone and de-key. Two mobiles connected back to back cannot emulate the required handshake. As a result, DMR subscriber radios operating in REPEAT mode will not be re-transmitted by RA-2T.
Q: Can the radios connected to RA-2T both operate in the same frequency band (VHF-VHF or UHF-UHF)?
A: Yes, if adequate RF isolation is provided to prevent receiver desensitization. As transmit power increases and frequency separation decreases, greater isolation must be provided, either by physical antenna separation, cavity filtering, or both. In-band operation without filtering is usually feasible at fixed sites on UHF with 15' or more vertical antenna spacing if frequency separation is 5 MHz or more and transmit power levels are kept low. In mobile applications, it may be challenging to achieve adequate physical antenna spacing but is do-able in some vehicles at UHF. For in-band operation at VHF (both fixed and mobile applications), cavity filtering is almost always needed for satisfactory results. Cross-band setups (VHF - UHF) work the best and are easy to implement without any filtering and without changes to the placement of existing antennas.
Q: What are some common uses of this device:
A: RA-2T serves primarily as a bridge between modes or bands and to fill gaps in RF coverage.
Examples:
1. Link two groups of simplex users, one operating in FM mode and other in DMR mode.
2. Link two groups of simplex users, one operating on VHF and other on UHF.
3. Link a DMR repeater with an FM repeater. Two XPR mobile transceivers, one operating in DMR mode and the other in FM mode, are set up as subscriber units on the two repeaters to be linked and interconnected with RA-2T. The link package (two mobiles + RA-2T) may be situated anywhere within the coverage area of both repeaters. If the FM repeater to be linked has a dropout delay (transmitter hang time) longer than 1 second, it will need to be shortened to one second or less. OR, for best results, configure the FM repeater to send PL tone on its output only when FM users are transmitting on the input and strip the repeater's TX PL immediately after each FM user de-keys. Then the FM repeater's hang time can be any duration. No configuration changes to the DMR repeater are needed.
4. In-building coverage: Extend coverage of distant Mototrbo repeaters by re-transmitting the output of the distant repeater onto an FM simplex channel inside buildings or other shielded locations where handheld coverage would otherwise be lacking, such as steel/concrete structures, basements, etc, Handhelds inside the building can also transmit on that same FM simplex channel and be re-transmitted in the opposite direction (to the input of the distant Mototrbo repeater), for communication with subscriber units. Example: Picture an organization or business with a fleet of mobiles operating on a DMR repeater. In the office, there is a DMR mobile transceiver in a desk tray with roof mounted Yagi aimed at the repeater for communication with mobiles. However, due to the building's construction or distance from the repeater, indoor handheld coverage is lacking. By adding one additional XPR mobile transceiver in the office (operating at low power on FM simplex with indoor antenna) and RA-2T, the dispatcher is free to step away from the office radio and move around within the building while remaining in contact with the DMR mobiles, using a handheld transceiver on FM simplex.
5. Mobile Extender (vehicular repeater): Same principle as above but the additional mobile transceiver and RA-2T are installed in a vehicle. Adequate RF isolation must be provided between the two vehicle-mounted transceivers (most easily achieved with radios operating in different RF bands). The output of a distant DMR repeater is re-transmitted at low power onto an FM simplex channel. When driver leaves the vehicle and enters a building or other location not well covered by the distant DMR repeater, a handheld transceiver on FM simplex maintains contact with the repeater.
